I feel like the complication most people deal with when buying soap and lip balms (even multiple food items) is that a good percentage of them contain an ingredient that’s often debated about within various communities. Palm oil. If you look in things like peanut butter and even Dr. Bronners bars of soap, they contain palm oil. You’re probably wondering what the big deal is. A large percentage (87 percent) of deforestation in Malaysia has been due to palm oil plantations. There has been some debate on whether or palm oil can be sustainably sourced through the years. But many choose to avoid it whenever possible. There have also been devastating effects on the orangutan population because of the palm oil plantation expansion. If you have ever seen photographs of any of this, it’s pretty heart breaking. But this is where Unearth Malee is taking a step in a different direction.
Why I Love Unearth Malee
- Not tested on animals
- No animal by product
- Zero waste packaging
- Their involvement with OFI (Orangutan Foundation International)
I know many people appreciate the pretty appearance of certain cosmetic and skincare items. I admit that I am drawn to certain items that tend to appeal to my personal aesthetic. But as much as I enjoy beautiful packaging from certain brands, I’ve come to notice how extreme it’s become. Unearth Malee seems to have taken that into consideration. From what I’ve observed from the products I have bought as well as the website, most of their products are packaged with eco-friendly paper, tin containers and flower seeded paper. I love the idea of using the wrappings from the soaps and planting it. I wish more brands would do that.
I’m in love with what I have used so far. I’m a rather huge fan of shampoo bars. I’m no hair model. But my hair looks and feels fabulous when using the White Orchid shampoo bar. Shampoo bars are not for everyone. But once you get used to using them, they are just as amazing as using the conventional stuff from drugstores. Not to mention, less plastic bottles are being used. I think what has stood out to me the most since using Unearth Malee is the Tumeric Balm. It’s amazing for inflammation, dry and damaged skin. What took me by surprise was the fact that this did not contain beeswax. Most of these eco-friendly treatment balms are made with beeswax. A lot of more nature-based products are. Happily, this one is not.
I am happy to have run across this brand on Etsy. I was just looking for a new shampoo bar. But I ended up finding a brand with nothing but love put into the products. Even right down to the packaging. Small little changed for you can make the biggest impact on the environment and the animals. If you’re interested in learning more, the Unearth Malee website is very informative about the issues I have mentioned on my blog. There is so much more to be said that I can save for a later date as I explore more of the brand. I’ve very tempted to try their deodorant and laundry detergent. I’m positive that I will be continuing to buy from this brand.
